I cut and smoothed R-717 and R-716 spacer and
rudder attach strips.
Next, I trimmed the notorious R-710.

I had heard about edge distance problems on this piece so I thought I was being
very conservative when I trimmed on the line above. However, I STILL ended up with
2 holes that will have slight edge distance problems (5/32"). I have an e-mail into
Van's to figure out if I will need to reorder the part (update: I didn't need to
reorder - Van's says it shouldn't be a problem). This part should be cut
at the far edges of the alignment holes that they provide. The radius of the holes
can be smoothed and then you should have sufficient edge distance.
Then, per the instructions I enlarged the hole in R704.

This turned out as well as R-710. You can see here that there is about 1/32" of
material left on the flange of the rib. I also asked Van's about this and I am waiting
a response. I don't believe it should be much of a problem though because a nutplate
attaches here and I don't believe the material at the edge of hole will undergo
much stress. I may even cut the material and create a "notch" that is smooth. I'm
pretty sure the material here if left as is will crack anyways over time (update:
Van's advised me to cut the remaining material to form a "U" shape. It looks great
now and shouldn't cause any problems).

This is what it looks like when all of the parst are clecoed together. You can see
here that R-710 will need to undergo some trimming to avoid chafing with the other
parts. You can also see that per the instructions, the rudder horn (R-405PD) edge
needed to be radiused to avoid interference with the R-704 rib. I did manage to
radius the horn and it fits fine now.
